President Obama isn’t winning himself any points with kids these days. He’s constantly spouting phrases like “we need to turn off the TV and the Xbox,” but now with this latest move, he may have just gone too far.

“Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas,” the president said earlier this year. “Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom.”

And the Sec. of Education chimed in as well:

“Our school calendar is based upon the agrarian economy and not too many of our kids are working the fields today,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a recent interview with The Associated Press.

Ha. Ha. Funny.

I’ve had a few different reactions to this news since I heard it, let me share them with you in order:

1) Nooo! Obama is so lame! I don’t want to spend more time in school and have less summer break!

2) Oh wait, I’m not eleven anymore. In fact, I’ve graduated college so this really has no effect on me whatsoever. Except when I have kids, they’ll be home less. Hmm, maybe this isn’t such a bad idea.

3) Wait no, this is dumb. I seem to recall about 70% of the school day being completely wasted by teachers pandering to dumb kids, while most people I knew never had homework and could finish a day’s worth of classwork in about two hours.

I suppose that this new system could benefit kids who are say, “lagging behind,” but don’t we have summer school and tutoring for that already? For kids like me, who already think the vast majority of time spent at school is a waste of time, an extra few hours a day or weeks a year would amount to nothing more than pure torture. Yeah, I know I sound like a pompous ass, but it’s true. School should be geared toward individual kids based on their own ability.

They need to think long and hard about this kind of plan before actually setting it in motion. It’s more or less the equivalent of like banning ice cream or burning all Harry Potter books. The kids are going to hate you forever.
