If the headline didn’t make your head explode from sheer bewilderment, read on.
Sarah Palin, currently on a massive media blitz for her book, recently took a stand for a form of women’s rights she believes in. Recently, Sarah Palin graced the cover of Newsweek looking like she was about ready to go for a run. That’s because she thought she was posing for Runner’s World magazine. Here’s her full quote.
“The choice of photo for the cover of this week’s Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this “news” magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant. The Runner’s World magazine one-page profile for which this photo was taken was all about health and fitness – a subject to which I am devoted and which is critically important to this nation. The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now. If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention – even if out of context.”
Right on, Sister!
The feminist movement was left with their jaws dropping to the floor like a cartoon wolf, shocked over their new heroine of the moment. However, some of rightfully pointed focus on the point rather than the person making the point.
This photo is placed completely out of context and is an obvious attempt to undermine her as a politician. If they had put Obama on the cover without his shirt on, we’d all be like WTF? It’s easy when you hate someone or don’t agree with them to dismiss everything they say. But the point here is not to defend Sarah Palin, it is to point out the sexism inherent in Newsweek’s choice of a cover photo for a female politician.
If nothing else, this at least shows that there’s a gem in everyone. Even if the proverbial mountain looks as hollow as an empty barrel.
Watch out for Pat Robertson to speak up for Secularism and Lou Dobbs’ upcoming Feliz Navidad party.
